Introducing My Journey as a Mahogany Dermatology Nursing Research Fellow
Healthcare has always been more than a profession to me. It is a calling rooted in service, continuous learning, and a deep desire to improve the quality of life for others. My name is David Mendos Gauji, RN, a Registered Nurse from Kaduna State, and I am honored to begin a new chapter as the 2026 Mahogany Dermatology Nursing | Education | Research™ Fellow. This opportunity reflects my commitment to advancing dermatology nursing education in a way that recognizes and represents diverse skin types while contributing to research that addresses critical gaps in skin of color dermatology.
My interest in pursuing this fellowship is grounded in a simple but important belief: dermatologic care should reflect the diversity of the patients it serves. My interest in dermatology grew from an appreciation of how closely skin health is tied not only to physical well-being but also to emotional and psychological health. Because many skin conditions are visible, they often influence confidence, identity, and social interaction. Despite this, gaps remain in how certain conditions are recognized and managed in people with darker skin tones, highlighting the need for more inclusive research and education.
In my role as a research fellow, I am actively involved in developing research-informed frameworks and approaches that address dermatologic conditions affecting diverse and underserved communities. My work places a strong emphasis on education, technology, and research, with a focus on improving understanding of skin conditions in communities of color and translating knowledge into practical tools that can support nurses and other healthcare professionals in clinical practice. I am particularly interested in leveraging digital tools and emerging technologies to enhance learning, knowledge dissemination, and clinical decision-making. Through systematic literature reviews, educational initiatives, and ongoing research contributions, I aim to strengthen clinical knowledge and ultimately improve outcomes for clients.
This fellowship also provides a valuable space to explore the intersection of research, technology, entrepreneurship, and innovation in healthcare. I am particularly interested in how digital tools and artificial intelligence can enhance dermatologic care. Given the visual nature of dermatology, emerging technologies have the potential to improve diagnostic accuracy, support clinical decision making, and expand access to care, especially in underserved regions.
Beyond research, this experience is shaping my broader vision for the future. I aspire to bridge clinical excellence with healthcare innovation by creating accessible platforms that support dermatology education for nurses and other healthcare professionals. I am equally passionate about increasing representation in dermatology and encouraging nurses to see themselves not only as caregivers but also as educators, researchers, innovators, and entrepreneurs.
Over the course of this fellowship, I intend to use my journey as a platform for impact. By sharing my experiences and insights, I hope to empower nurses with practical knowledge about dermatology and the pathways available within the field. I am also committed to educating healthcare professionals on the growing role of business, digital tools, and artificial intelligence in modern healthcare, helping to broaden perspectives on what is possible within nursing careers. I plan to translate my research work into accessible knowledge by publishing articles and educational content based on my reviews. Leveraging AI-supported tools where appropriate, I aim to enhance how information is communicated, making dermatology knowledge clearer, more engaging, and more widely available to those who need it.
Over the next twelve months, I will be documenting my journey through ongoing reflections, sharing lessons from research, clinical insights, and personal growth. My hope is that this experience will not only strengthen my own development but also contribute to a wider conversation about improving dermatologic care, increasing representation, and making healthcare more inclusive and accessible.
This marks the beginning of a journey I believe will lead to impactful research, meaningful collaborations, and innovative contributions to dermatology nursing.
I look forward to sharing the process.
